“When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them.  And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me.’” (Matthew 11:2-6) Being in a hard situation with time on your hands is an exceptional place for doubt and second thoughts.  At least, that seems to be the case for John in this Sunday’s gospel lesson.  This preacher is struggling; this great orator who became known throughout the land, now needs to hear the Good News for himself.  And of course, Jesus doesn’t fail: “Go and tell John…”  I don’t know about you, but I can relate to John.  I’ve never been in a place half as difficult as his, but I also have wondered, “Jesus, are you the One?”  And of course, Jesus doesn’t fail: “remember again all that I have done in your life…” Sometimes, all of us need reminding, even on the way to Christmas!
