“Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:5-8) This Sunday we move into Holy Week. We begin in one crowd with singing the Lord’s praises but soon we will be with another mob, calling for his crucifixion. Talk about being of two minds! The Apostle offers us the only solution to our double-mindedness in this ancient hymn. Have Jesus’ mind; allow him to so enter your life that slowly but surely his life is becoming yours. Notice well: Paul does not say try to have a mind “like” Jesus or try to act “like” Jesus. We need more than that. Our world needs far more than that! We need him transforming us into people who think and act differently. I want to invite you to open your life to Christ in a new way this Holy Week as you accompany him on his final paths. Sing his hosannas this Sunday. Feast with him on Thursday. Stand at his cross on Friday and watch for him until the light dawns on the glorious Easter morning. You know, it seems to me that in the end, the only way to have his mind is to spend time with him. This is the perfect time for that. Have a great week!
