“The scripture says, ‘No one who believes in him will be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” (Romans 10:11-13)  We’re now in the season of Lent, a season of preparation, reflection and repentance.  Probably most of us, at least at some point in our lives have been very hesitant to take an honest look at ourselves.  Many of us fear that our “expiration dates” are past and we may not be very acceptable any more.  Have you ever thought or feared that?  If so, then look again at this week’s epistle.  “Everyone!”  Not many, or most, or just those trying to live pretty good lives, or those who haven’t goofed up too badly, recently “shall be saved.”  No, it really is everyone who calls.  And the reason for that is simple: this was never about our basic goodness or lack of sin or even how hard we have been trying.  Instead, it has always been, and always will be, about Jesus.  That would be the same Jesus whom we shall be following for the next 40 days.  That is the Jesus whom we will follow to a cross where he will hang in shame; where his call will go unanswered so that ours will always be.  It is Lent.  Take a good long, honest look at yourself and then call.  Call for maybe the first time or call for the hundredth time.  The Lord who loves you, the Lord who has taken our shame upon himself is listening and you shall be saved.  Have a great week!
