In the United Methodist tradition, we often use the word “connectionalism” to describe our organizational structure. It expresses more than just a denominational or bureaucratic order; it is a spiritual and theological conviction that proclaims we are far more effective together than we are apart. By maintaining an integrated, covenant bond between local churches, general agencies, and Annual Conferences the UMC creates a regionally and globally impactful network that no individual or congregation could achieve alone.
As we come out of denominational trauma and live through the resulting transitions, it is tempting to silo ourselves, lick our wounds, and pull back a little. We may ponder that it is best to not expose ourselves as much as we did before and order our house strictly for our own benefit. In doing so we may feel better, even smarter in the short term, but it sends negative ripples throughout the relationships we are called to maintain.
A commitment to connectionalism helps prevent such siloed ministry. When local churches are devoted to the partnerships within and beyond their Conference everyone benefits. There is a powerful thread of comfort and strength that moves beyond socioeconomic, racial, and geographic dynamics. It fosters a spirit of oneness that helps the church remain a big, beautiful, and blessed tent of Wesleyan grace.
The forty-seven Foundations that exist across United Methodism are a great example of the strength of the connection. We exist because local churches see the value of pooling, better- connecting, their resources with those from other churches and missional agencies for growth. There is always risk in market investing, but the management fees are reasonable, the portfolio performs well (13.13% net rate of return in 2026), and your money remains yours.
The United Methodist Foundation for the Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference goes back eighty-five years to a documented chartering with the State of Tennessee in February 1941. The TWKC has over five hundred congregations, with over three hundred having an investment relationship with us. We stand ready to meet with your church or missional agency, hear your hopes and dreams, and connect with you in a relationship of hope, trust, and prosperity.
